On the way to moving from my husband’s dream business doing photography to creating a community-oriented business in collaboration with Wanderers Tavern owners, Nicole and Thando, I find myself periodically “freaking out”. It happens primarily when I see the hugeness of the task itself, as well as the out-of-comfort-zoning I’m experiencing in the process of making this transition.
Part of it, I sense, is because the investment is stretching every resource—mental, emotional, monetary, physical, psychic…you name it! There’s this inner voice shouting at me… “What the heck are you thinking? What about being conservative and having all your ducks in a row before you embark on something this huge and risky and complex? You don’t know anything about any of this, or not much, or not enough at any rate! Have you lost your mind? How irresponsible can you be? What if…….?” And so on.
As I move through all these emotions and randomly occurring mini “panic attacks”, it’s been my salvation to have the Oxytocin Breath. When it starts to happen, I am able to use this invaluable tool to bring me back, first and foremost, into the moment, and through the soothing of the vagus nerve and increased production of dopamine and all the other tangible responses elicited from the body, regain a sense of equanimity. Then, my brain can come back into focus in a more practical and grounded way that allows me to put the “freaking out” into perspective.
Instead of resisting my response, I can allow it, breathe pleasurably and be able to observe myself going into the adrenaline response from a more powerful position. It’s just one of any number of possible responses, and I can choose to breathe and exhale with the Haaaaaaahhhhhhh sound that so adroitly vibrates the vagus nerve and lets me know there’s really nothing “out there” to fear.
Then, I can choose to experience this new adventure from a place of ease and curiosity and learning to attend to each new challenge along the path in the moment. The Now is where all the creativity and originality and playfulness are available to tap into for insights and truths that facilitate inspired actions. Trust. Faith. Commitment. My heart beats in a trill of anticipation and enthusiasm as I see the possibilities tumbling forth enticingly…
