2016 has been a great year for fashion. The fashion and style from the 1990s has returned in 2016 to become one of the biggest trends along with a range of other fun and fabulous styles that have been taking over the closets of women all over the globe. Here are some of the latest trends that you need to be aware of.
1. The Choker
One of the biggest trends of the year, this versatile accessory can be worn with both formal and informal outfits. Wear with a shirt dress to channel 90's grunge along with a black matte lip color and dark nails (for an extra style statement try matte nails that are trending right now). The best part of this accessory is that you can even make it at home yourself, using some lace, some dangling pieces for the centerpiece and a pair of clasps for the back. If you want to wear this accessory for a more formal occasion, try to choose a low neck dress or top to shine the spotlight on your choker.
A method of wearing the choker that is especially popular with celebrities is to pair a thick black plain choker with an off the shoulder black top. The effect is simple and sharp!
2. Off The Shoulder
Whether you wear it as a dress or as a top, the off the shoulder look is very trendy right now. If you wear an off the shoulder dress for the day, or for a more casual event in general, pair the dress with white sneakers. For the evening, high heels would look great and will give a more formal look. When trying to wear an off the shoulder for a more evening look, opt for silk or similar fabric to give a more formal feel to the look. Jewel tones are great for the evening and for the daytime cotton or denim off the shoulder tops can be paired top with high waisted jeans to give a relaxed boho vibe to the outfit.
It only takes a visit to Instagram or any social media site to see what the biggest models around the globe wear when off duty. Fitted leggings that are usually worn in the gym along with white sneakers with a crop top and a bomber or denim jacket. Athleisure is the latest trend you need to know about. It's the latest transformation of boring, baggy workout clothes into something fit for the runway. For an ultra luxe look, carry your sleekest tote bag with your hottest workout clothes. The trick is to wear fitted leggings with white sneakers. Unfortunately wearing baggy track pants simply doesn't look as luxe as leggings. Model Bella Hadid wore this trend and even combined a choker into her look.
4. Long Hair
Gone are the days when everyone was getting short hair or trying to match Anna Wintour's short hairstyle. Today, the focus is on long hair. Just take a look at social media queen Kylie Jenner or her older sister Kim Kardashian, both of whom are massive global trend setters. Both sisters have been sporting long locks this year. Along with natural, grown out eyebrows, something that has been trending for a few years now (thanks to model Cara Delevingne), long hair is the best way to look trendy this season. If you happen to have very short hair, don't worry, hair extensions are the next best alternative.
5. The 90s
What goes around must come back around, this saying couldn’t be more true today. The 90s were an era of grunge, of being natural yet rebellious. In 2016, the 90s are more on trend than ever. From loose 90s hip-hop inspired clothes and hairstyles to Grunge oversized jackets, the 90s today have become a style movement more than a trend. Wear a strappy dress over a fitted white tee and a pair of doc martens for an easy way to perfect this look.
For hair, try the half up half down hair bun look or cornrow inspired braids. When wearing a satin oversized jacket make sure you pick one with a matching nylon zipper to keep the look clean. Some of the most iconic 90s outfits came courtesy of hip hop star Missy Elliot, supermodel Kate Moss and the movie Clueless.
6. Grungy Makeup
The 90s fashion movement also explains why mossy green lipstick is suddenly so popular. Not only dark, mossy green but a range of similar colors in blue, brown and even black are suddenly gaining popularity. In recent years nude lip colour has been popular, but with the rise of the grunge movement, stronger and more matte shades are gaining momentum. This magazine cover from 1998 shows models wearing similar shades to what is popular today.
7. Round Sunglasses
One of the biggest accessories to come out of 2016 are the round sunglasses. From A- list celebs to the shops on every high street, round sunglasses are the accessory of the season. These sunglasses match with practically any type of outfit, with the exception of perhaps, a formal dress. This year, round sunglasses are your best friend!
