In the US & Canada there is presently a growing campaign, "Run Like A Girl", to support girls in maintaining the confidence they feel as a young girl in pursuing their dreams. Today's news story on Syrian women refugees pursuit of a "normal" life in refugee camps evoked a picture for me, of strong women running for a better life, fearlessly running forward, grabbing their futures so as not to be denied the opportunity to create them as they wish. Behind the images visible to the naked eye, I see the images of their souls or spirits, and they are like the most powerful Olympic runners...
We will get a glimpse of their brave resilience in "a new short documentary by filmmaker Aliya Naumoff" where "a few women are sharing a look into life in those compounds... Naumoff says the women voiced a desire to continue bringing meaning to their lives through education and work."
Let us remind each other of the strength we each have access to within us. Let us open to the seeing new pictures - of the truth within each of us, and not just what the media shows us.
There are films such as these already playing in your local film festivals and especially at the women's film festivals that play in nearly every major city in almost every state. If you feel called to attend one of these films, rise up and go and allow yourself to connect with your feelings. I often find they bring me new reflections on self awareness and you will too.
I heard a quote recently that went something like this: We think being in touch with our emotions allows us to close doors to feeling certain emotions while allowing us to feel other emotions, like the preferable ones of joy and peace and contentment. Yet it doesn't work that way, there is 1 door and if closed to some emotions will be also closed to really experiencing all emotions in a fulfilling way.
