My most beloved Sacred Teacher was my maternal grandmother. In addition to practical skills like how to cook and iron clothes, she taught me my first dolphin and lioness skills.
One example of the dolphin skills she taught me was to observe and care for plants. As a young woman I used to describe myself as having a black thumb, as all my houseplants would start to die prematurely. Patiently my grandmother would take them back to her house, nurture them back to health, and send them back to me. Now I am happy to say my thumb has become greener and I have restored back to health my daughter’s and my granddaughter’s plants.
In her life she repeatedly acted with lioness courage. As a young mother she was diagnosed with a heart condition. They sent her home from the hospital with 11 different medications. The doctors told her to put her matters in order as she would probably not live more than 2 years. She did not accept that and searched for alternative health treatments. She found a homeopathic doctor who told that if she continued to take those 11 medications she would indeed be dead in 2 years. He told her to take only 3 of them and gave her homeopathic medication. She lived to be 86!
In her 50’s she slipped on a banana peel in the street and fractured her hip. The doctors told her she would never walk. In those days they did not have the amazing hip replacement surgery we have now. When she asked why, they replied: “the pain will be intolerable”. Her reply was “If pain is the only thing in my way, then I will walk”. She developed her own physical therapy routine as she been on the gymnastics team in college. I still can remember seeing her lying in bed gingerly and persistently doing leg raises. It took several years to graduate from her wheelchair to a walker, and then she was walking with a cane, leading us to family picnics in the countryside. A few years later she fell and fractured the same hip again. For the second time she proved the doctors wrong by teaching herself to walk.
I could probably fill a book with the many examples of how her life has been a Sacred Teaching for me. The most important one is that she maintained a cheerful positive attitude throughout her life, always sharing her SHE, Soul’s Highest Expression with us!
