"Voice is power. When you speak your voice, you speak your power." Arthur Joseph-Vocal Awareness
The kind of Voice that Arthur is speaking of in his quote above, is Voice with a capital V.
The Divine Voice that is here to be expressed dynamically and deliberately...with delight and deliciousness.
In the rest of this blog I’ll be speaking to that Voice...hence, I am not communicating about the distorted voice (with a small v) that is used as a survival tool in situations of fight, flight, or freeze…
Voice is power and it moves and inspires…the Divine Voice has the innate ability to Be, Create, and Collaborate while riding on waves of Ease...
In speaking of Voice, we are not merely talking about the physiological aspects of one's voice, the pitch and timbre; we are also talking about the emotional, spiritual, and visceral aspects.
Our true Voice is the signature of our soul. Yet many of us are afraid of owning our own Voice. Perhaps we don't own our Voice because we fear being vulnerable, revealed, or rejected.
That fear of being revealed, preventing us from owning our Divine Voice, is only the limiting voice of the ego. It is an inner belief that what we really are must be disguised or down played to be acceptable to others. Clearly, breaking free of this belief will be a major step into full Selfhood.
When owning our Voice, we must be attentive to six key elements:
Our posture: A slouching posture disturbs the natural flow of energy into and out of the body. Your Voice is a vibration riding on a column of air. Give it an unobstructed passage.
Our breath: Short, shallow breaths rein in the expressiveness of one's true Voice. Breathe deeply.
Let your Voice be like a musical instrument, able to rise and fall in volume, change in pitch, because it is being expressed by someone operating at full power and capacity.
Not judging and criticizing oneself: If you self-critique at the same time you speak, your self-criticism will be like a film on the windows of your soul.
Speak from your present vibration: This is the only true vehicle of authentic communication. Express what you feel at this present moment of time and space so there can be true interchange of vibration and therefore you can be heard viscerally. (speaking from past vibrations will be heard only through the mental field of others)
Have an awareness that gives rise to gratitude: Whatever you have to say, let the foundation beneath it be your intention to make the communication meaningful, with honor to all parties, leading all parties forward.
To own your Voice is not just a strategy of communicating better for the sake of getting your own way. It is not a way of doing. It is a way of being. Our true Voice communicates to the world our authentic self, and the benefits of that communication can be limitless. The first benefit is the joyous yet grounded feeling of being your higher Self. Beyond that comes the potential of uniting with others who resonate with your "wavelength," and wish to combine strengths.
To own your Voice is not an act of putting on any type of mask or presenting in a performance manner. On the contrary, it is the act of taking off one's mask. It's a strip-away process that allows the windows of our soul to open up so the rest of us can plainly observe the soaring of your Spirit.
Your true Voice comes from your inner depths. Both physiologically and energetically, you launch it from your belly. As it passes through your throat, it takes on the qualities of courage and surrender, and announces the presence of an individual who chooses to be a transformative instrument. Your true Voice communicates the essence of your higher Self. It affects others emotionally, spiritually, or intellectually, yet at the same time - and often in much greater measure - it also affects them viscerally. The authenticity of your Voice will be obvious, which will have an empowering and soothing effect on the listener. She or he will be grateful to feel someone with essence, vulnerability, authenticity, and courage. This we can call Vocal integrity.
To own your Voice doesn't mean that you must talk with the same tone and energy at all times. It doesn't mean speaking softly, or forcefully. It is not a technique, or a strategy to be used only when convenient or appropriate.
To own one's voice is to own one's soul power. The origin of this power is Self Love and Self Trust streaming from within. And..the origin of that is love and trust in the power between us, around us, and beyond us. To own our Voice, to unleash the sound of our Spirit, to communicate the energy of our deeper self, means that we are singing our song, the unique song of our being-ness .
When that quality emerges, others who listen will get inspired to sing their true song. A level of intra-connection is created. This intra-connection (within) will then become the basis of inter-connection (between).
